Meditation

for Violin & Viola

Program Notes:

Meditation is a one-movement composition for violin and viola, commissioned by Ka-Ro ensemble. It is dedicated to the memory of my mother Sandy (1960-2024), and to Ka-Ro ensemble [Kallifoni Sarantakou and Orfeas Sarantakos].

The composition is inspired by Zen philosophy, traditional music for shakuhachi (Honkyoku), and the music of Somei Satoh. It is influenced by the concept of music as a tool of meditation (like the music for solo shakuhachi), and as such, it attempts to bring the listeners to the "here and now", to a tranquil yet emotional state of silence and solitary contemplation.
